La ciberseguridad empresarial se reinventa ante la era de la IA generativa [Entrevista a Gabriela Zornoza, de Check Point]

La inteligencia artificial generativa ha transformado por completo el panorama de la ciberseguridad. Si antes los ataques informáticos seguían patrones más o menos predecibles, ahora se adaptan, aprenden y se camuflan. Al mismo tiempo, las herramientas defensivas han ganado capacidad de respuesta gracias a la automatización y el análisis inteligente.

En medio de esta revolución se encuentra Gabriela Zornoza, especialista en TI y Cloud en Check Point, y reconocida como CloudGuard Specialist of the Year – Iberia 2024. Hemos conversado con ella para tratar de entender cómo la inteligencia artificial se ha convertido, a la vez, en un riesgo y en una poderosa aliada para proteger los entornos digitales.

Un cambio de paradigma en la seguridad digital

“La inteligencia artificial se ha convertido en amenaza y también en víctima. Es una nueva superficie de ataque”, resume Zornoza. La especialista explica que, gracias a su capacidad de aprendizaje, la IA es capaz de crear ataques polimórficos que cambian constantemente para evadir los sistemas tradicionales de detección.

El impacto se nota especialmente en el phishing a gran escala, que ahora puede incluir mensajes personalizados, voces o vídeos manipulados, los conocidos deepfakes. “Como amenaza ha sido un cambio total, y como víctima también, porque ahora se puede atacar directamente a la IA con técnicas como las prompt injections”, advierte.

Desde Check Point, señala, se han desarrollado soluciones específicas para proteger tanto los sistemas basados en inteligencia artificial como los que pueden ser atacados por ella.

Chatbots y asistentes: la nueva puerta de entrada para los ciberdelincuentes

Cada vez más empresas utilizan chatbots y asistentes impulsados por IA para atender clientes o gestionar compras en línea. Sin embargo, esta automatización abre nuevas vías de ataque. “Si un chatbot se usa para hacer compras o interactuar con clientes, alguien podría atacarlo mediante una inyección de prompt”, explica Zornoza.

El objetivo de este tipo de ataque es engañar al sistema para que ejecute acciones indebidas o revele información sensible. “También existe el envenenamiento indirecto, cuando los atacantes infiltran información defectuosa para corromper el modelo de IA y alterar sus respuestas. Es un riesgo silencioso pero muy real.”

Para los usuarios, añade, la defensa es más complicada: lo básico es verificar siempre los enlaces y comprobar que no se trate de sitios falsificados antes de introducir datos personales o bancarios.

Seguridad unificada para un mundo multicloud

La expansión de la nube ha multiplicado la complejidad de los sistemas corporativos. “A día de hoy, la IA está muy presente en los entornos de nube pública, con servicios cognitivos basados en IA. Cuando las empresas trabajan con entornos multinube, la seguridad se complica si no está unificada”, explica la experta.

Desde Check Point, recomiendan centralizar la protección con soluciones que apliquen políticas uniformes y análisis en tiempo real. “La clave es automatizar la prevención y la remediación, porque los equipos humanos no pueden seguir el ritmo de los ataques. Pero todo debe quedar verificado por una persona para garantizar que las acciones sean correctas.”

Los modelos de IA también deben protegerse

No solo los datos están en riesgo: los propios modelos de inteligencia artificial pueden ser atacados o manipulados. “Nosotros en Check Point adquirimos una empresa llamada Lakera para la seguridad específica de los modelos de lenguaje”, explica Zornoza.

El proceso, detalla, consiste en entrenar los modelos frente a posibles ataques antes de ponerlos en producción, y después validar las entradas y salidas en tiempo real una vez están en uso. Además, aplican el principio de mínimo privilegio en las conexiones API para evitar que los sistemas ejecuten acciones no autorizadas.

Estas medidas se integran en las soluciones de Web Application Firewall (WAF) de la compañía, adaptadas a las nuevas necesidades de seguridad en entornos con IA.

Cuando la inteligencia artificial se convierte en aliada

A pesar de los riesgos, la inteligencia artificial también se ha convertido en una herramienta esencial para reforzar la ciberseguridad. “En Check Point llevamos años utilizando la IA para reforzar nuestra capacidad de detección de amenazas”, destaca Zornoza.

La base de conocimiento ThreatCloud recopila información de más de tres décadas y emplea más de 50 motores de IA para analizar millones de eventos en segundos. “La IA está entrenada para detectar patrones y descubrir ataques nuevos, no solo los conocidos”, añade.

Además, la automatización permite responder en tiempo real ante vulnerabilidades. “Si detectamos una vulnerabilidad en la nube, el sistema genera automáticamente la política necesaria para proteger ese entorno”, explica. Y dentro de las plataformas, la IA actúa como copiloto de los equipos humanos, ayudándoles a detectar errores o duplicidades en las políticas de seguridad.

“En definitiva, la IA nos ataca por un lado, pero también se ha convertido en nuestro mejor aliado para defendernos”, concluye.
